Trade and gender - are the agreements of WTO a trap for women?URL: http://www.vguengl.org/medialibrary/files/1_0511WTOgenusohandelinenglish.pdf This paper provides a general overview of the relationship between trade and gender, with the purpose of exploring whether international trade changes, maintains or reinforces existing gender structures. The first section of the paper outlines the main differences between men and women with an emphasis on women’s work remaining invisible within the patriarchal society of today. The second section of the paper provides a summary on the background of the WTO and the Doha Development Agenda before assessing the GATS agreement in relation to gender and the relationship between NAMA and gender. The paper concludes that free trade does not benefit everybody and therefore free trade could reinforce existing gender inequalities.
