The author reviews the literature on gender, trade and investment in the English-speaking regions of the Caribbean. The literature reviewed portrays a predominantly negative picture of the trade liberalization process in the Caribbean. This is because the contemporary trade agenda contains agreements on investment, services, intellectual property rights and competition policy, which potentially have negative implications for Caribbean economic social and political development.
The aim of the literature review is to identify the gaps in the literature for future research and to create a database of documents relevant to the following topics:
· Food security and the Agreement on Agriculture
· Trade Related Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) and the revision of national laws to comply
· General Agreement on Services (GATS) and the nature of its implementation process in the region
· Impact of NAFTA and
· Impacts on the Banana Industry
The literature reviewed is divided into five key sections Gender and Trade, Impact of NAFTA, Impact on the Banana Industry, General Agreement on Services and Trade Liberalization.
