Caribbean Gender and Trade Network the Impact of the Trade Liberalisation on Women’s Livelihoods and Their Response
This paper focuses on the gender impact of trade on employment with a specific focus on the banana industry. The paper analysis each country situation individually and provides an outline of the key factors affecting employment opportunities, the underlying issues and who are the most affected by trade. Finally the report looks at the impact of NAFTA on the Dominican economy.
The report ends on a positive note as it acknowledges that the efforts of the Caribbean Gender and Trade Network (CGTN), the Caribbean Association for Feminist Research and Action (CAFRA), DAWN Caribbean, UNIFEM, Women in Development Europe (WIDE) and the Caribbean Reference Group on External Trade Relations (CRG), are now coming together and policy makers are starting to incorporate their proposals and strategies in policy making.
