On the 29th May Waldo Mendoza, research coordinator for COPLA Peru, participated as a speaker in the Regional Congress of Economy Students – COREE 2008 whose topic this year was ‘International commerce, alternatives for development for the South Region of Peru: a balance’. Mendoza participated with a presentation entitled ‘TLC with the United States: impacts and risks for Peru and the region’.

The event took place from the 26th to the 30th May in the Universidad Nacional San Agustín de Arequipa. During the four days of congress expositions and lectures were based on four issues: the panorama of world commerce and its relation with the south, the APEC Forum 2008, trade between the Andean Community of Nations and the European Union, the TLC with the United States and issues concerning bordering countries and their multilateral relations in the region.

Mendoza framed his exposition on the regional work of COPLA while Alan Fairlie presented on successful trade experiences between Peru and the European Union. Fairlie is one of the winners of COPLA’s calls for research and is now finishing a case study on the exporters of organic bananas in the north of Peru that will be published soon.
